It is widely accepted that lunatic asylums were improperly used to incarcerate unwanted wives in the early part of this century. A wealthy man only needed the signature of two friendly doctors and his wife was admitted to a 'sanatorium'. Drugs such as laudanum were routinely used to keep the women under control. What is not usually admitted is that many families used the same tactics when 'unsuitable' husbands became too demanding.
'I married a man who was totally unsuitable,' says Emily, 'he had no money and no manners. Divorce was out of the question. Mummy's doctor arranged for Teddy to be admitted to a mental health facility. I didn't see him for several weeks - and by then I hardly recognised him. The greedy grasping young man had been transformed into a passive gentle creature who begged me to release him. I knew nothing about any feminisation, Mummy told me they were merely teaching how to behave like a gentleman. But I have to say that every time I spoke to him about it later he seemed perfectly happy in his new role. I was just glad to have him out of that awful establishment.'
